Nutrition standards urged for school food

Sunday, 29 April 2007 18:00
" WASHINGTON - Whole-grain crackers, low-fat yogurt, fruit and water could become the school snacks of the future, driving out fattening fancies such as cola and fried chips.

The Institute of Medicine on Wednesday recommended new standards for school snacks and foods that sharply would limit calories, fat and sugar while encouraging more nutritious eating.

Concerned about the rise of obesity in young people, Congress asked the institute to develop the standards. Lawmakers now will consider them, as will state and local school officials. "

Hacking Your Body's Bacteria for Better Health

" Brandon Keim
Modern humans are bacteria-killing machines. We assassinate microbes with hand soap, mouthwash and bathroom cleaners. It feels clean and right.

But some scientists say we're overdoing it. All this killing may actually cause diseases like eczema, irritable bowel syndrome and even diabetes. The answer, they say, is counterintuitive: Feed patients bacteria.

"Probiotics (pills containing bacteria) have resulted in complete elimination of eczema in 80 percent of the people we've treated... "

" By Charles Q. Choi
Special to LiveScience

The bark of certain yew trees can yield a medicine that fights cancer. Now scientists find the dirt that yew trees grow in can supply the drug as well, suggesting a new way to commercially harvest the medicine.

Scientists originally isolated the drug paclitaxel—now commonly known as Taxol—in 1967 from the bark of Pacific yew trees (Taxus brevifolia) in a forest near the Mount St. Helens in Washington. This yew also yields related compounds known as taxanes that can be converted to paclitaxel. Research since then has revealed other yew species generate paclitaxel and taxanes as well, as do some fungi and certain hazelnut varieties. "

Intelligence drugs could be 'common as coffee'
Written by Administrator

" By Nicole Martin

It sounds like the stuff of science fiction: a new generation of drugs that make people more intelligent.

But they are precisely the kind of mind-altering substances that students and businessman could be taking in the future to pass exams and boost work performance.

Foresight, a Government think-tank, believes that "cognitive enhancers" could be "as common as coffee" within a couple of decades to help a person think faster, relax and sleep more efficiently."

Home Depot Announces Eco-Labeling Program
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 19 April 2007 08:40
"ATLANTA, April 17, 2007 -- After years as environmental groups' poster child for irresponsible retailing, Home Depot today announced a new program to highlight environmentally friendly products on its shelves.

Home Depot has labeled more than 2,500 Eco Options products already, including all-natural insect repellents, compact fluorescent lightbulbs, cellulose insulation, front-load washing machines, and certified sustainable forestry products. By 2009, Home Depot expects the Eco Options label to grow to 6,000 products.

As part of the Eco Options launch, Home Depot plans to give away 1 million compact fluorescent lightbulbs at its stores on Earth Day, April 22. The company estimates that replacing 1 million incandescent bulbs with CFLs will result in savings of $12 million in annual energy costs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 147 million pounds. Do You Take Vitamins? Do You Need A Prescription? The FDA Thinks You Do!
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 18 April 2007 02:39
"The FDA is attempting to regulate vitamins, herbs and juices as "drugs". If they achieve this goal, you would need a doctor's prescription for your multivitamins! Whole Foods stores would boast bare shelves, as the pharmaceutical industry stepped in!
When it comes to health freedom, this is the FDA's end game. A new FDA "guidance" document, published on the FDA's website, reveals plans to reclassify virtually all vitamins, supplements, herbs and even vegetable juices as FDA-regulated drugs. Massage oils and massage rocks will be classified as "medical devices" and require FDA approval. The document is called Docket No. 2006D-0480. Draft Guidance for Industry on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products and Their Regulation by the Food and Drug Administration. "
